Since QIS is running a well-conceived stock challenge contest already that is open to everyone, has more realistic rules, and encourages a participants to share their reasons for making various trades (more educational value), I recommend that we all do it instead. There is little point to Elephant taking a whole bunch of time to administer a sideline contest when there is a perfectly good one already run by the site administrators.

Time for your enquiry(questions)is now... The rules need to be very well understand. Short position will be permit for stocks over $2.00 If you sell short at $2.47 and the stock hit $3.25 and you dont have the money to cover your loss on paper,I will buy back the stock at the opening price in the next business day. You could be cash negative...then I will substract the amount when I will uptdate your portfolio. You have the advantage to buy a stock from another participant...why because you can sell if you do a mistake to avoid further loss and you can also lock your profit but if you buy the same stock in the open market you will have to keep it until the end of the contest(very dangerous if you are wrong on it.) I will uptdate the portfolio once a week and will eliminate the last two participants for the third edition which is already set for December 18,2009. I am in talk with other party to expand the contest with another chalenge for the third edition.

Congrats to Woodstove on your win. The funny part of this contest was we were all supposed to be up big not down big. Oh well I think we all can say that we learned something from this contest. I would like to ask Doren how he is looking at putting his contest on. If he is going to put one on that is going to coincide with this one? What sort of rules etc. Cheers

I think that everyone here can take a slice of humble pie after seeing their portfolios tank. As for Elephant and your new added rules. You have zero right to make any rules such as you have. I personally believe that Doren should be the one facilitating any contests here given its his web site. I also do not think this site needs a person running a contest given his terrible record in making attacking comments to those who dissagree with them on stocks. I do not need to put these comments up here as we all know what I am talking about. So Doren set up the contest and tell us about your rules. As for you Elephant I think we all can say thank you for your effort in putting this contest on. Lastly congratulations to the winner of this contest. I would really like to hear what others think of my suggestions.

Silver has dropped below 10.30 Euro/oz. From Kitco just now, price is 15.30 USD / 1.5039 exch = 10.17 euro. Ref May 26th post. My guess is that serious accumulation buying will start to show up now, but price could go as low as 9.00-ish euro/oz before hits a bottom due to really significant purchasing. Or the Ag price might never go that low - the Euro is also an inflating currency and the 10.30 figure is from 7 months ago. So waiting for 9.00 might miss the boat. Just an opinion.

mrjones and others - The easiest way to get a (edited) to go away is to ignore them. Too many of you keep engaging this (edited) in debates on this board which always degenerate into attacks and accusations thereof. Why not just stop replying to posts made by this (edited) and he can chat with himself? (By the way, I used the "(edited)" part myself to save QIS the trouble of having to go in and erase what I otherwise would have inserted).

Well, I would say legend is a relative term given some of the posters that have frequented this board over the last few years. Personally, I really feel you should have put in your selection of 100% cash - I think that would have been a very good lesson to many here, and actually, would have been quite humourous.

Hey Broke this is a contest. If you can learn something along the way its a good thing. I will admit I have so far been humbled by how my stocks have gone down. Looking back its too bad I didnt focus more into oil plays however who would have known. As for me pumping up myself and saying I am going to win this thing I think you need to go back and read all my messages. I have yet to make any comments on here or anywhere else making your claim. I would love to see you post where I have said this. If you cannot find one admit you are wrong and appoligize. You cannot make claims that are false or outright lies. I dont ever remember making any claims and I do not have the time or effort to go thru all my posts online. I have been only working 80 hours a week lately so there really is not much time for chat right now on here.

Can someone let mr.jones know that this is not a "short position" contest. My goodness, in less than 7 months he is down 42% The funniest thing is how serious and confident he was when he made his picks back in November. Have rarely seen such a poor performance in a stock contest that was so unrestricted in choice. Gross!

My proposed $100k cash position is looking better all the time had I entered this. By my count, I would have been leading in about 17 of the 28 weeks so far (assuming it was invested in a GIC at an interest rate of about 3 or 4 percent).

I have been considering a stock picking contest among website visitors for a number of years but the administration aspects of it have kept me on the sidelines. I could even add a separate page and link for the contest if you guys want to come up with the criteria and rules and administration could be kept to a minimum. I believe it would be very popular.

Posted: Sunday Mar 16 12:50:33PM 2008

That idea of having an extra sum of cash a couple of times later on during the contest was also idea-stimulating.

Agreed. Althought it would make more work for elephant a little bit of tinkering during the year would make the contest a little more interactive.

I took note...but as you know about private placement...always a hold period(4 months)minimum before the right to unload directly to public market... We should have at least the same rule...if not we just have a speculative contest in the very short term... For sure I took a gamble with AMB and NT and could avoid big loss last month...but we need some rules... The company want loyal shareholders...lol!!!

No problem for me however Elephant decides to run the game. It is just for fun, and to share some of our different ideas about what are good ways to pick stocks. Hope we get into a discussion of why we each made choices we did ... that is what would be interesting. Elephant can unwind/amend my "trade" if that is what he thinks best. I just went fast because it puts the "what shall I choose as game entry" decision on done stack. Prefer to reserve dithering for real-money choices! Cheers, and thanks to Elephant for trying to run this game.

I again have no problem with reducing an entrances value by the sums you have mentioned but then again keep in mind Elephant is allowing us to now invest $25,000. So these values would imputed after the recent downward draft in the market. I guess the more and more I think about it we should stick with the original plan. Especially if others are prevented from joining late.

By mrjones321

Posted: Sunday Dec 2 11:20:14PM 2007

Elephant you havent allowed other members to join your contest because they were late and you were following your strict guide lines. How is it you have strict guide lines but you feel free to change the rules 3 weeks later? For me its really no big deal unless we find out you found a stock that you know something about and you want to capitalize using the contest. You will be the only one in this contest with the powers to change rules on a whim. So my point is? Well maybe you should allow others to join given this is really more for fun and there isnt a big prize at the end of the rainbow. Of course they would have to start using todays prices. Any new insight into companies that we are not aware of is a positive to all here. The other point would be if you want to change rules there should be a consensus with other participants. Again as previously stated I have no problem necessarilly with adding $25k but I would ask why is it restricted only to companies that are currently not in your portfolio? Curious to hear others opinions. Good luck

I would like to add some fun to that contest. December 1,2007 January 1,2008 Every participant get an extra $25 000 to manage their portfolio. You can buy whatever you want but only one stock with the $25 000 and you cannot buy a stock you already own If you keep it cash..no problem but you get no interest. You need to post your trade on the site and you buy at the closing...then I will add your purchase to your portfoilio. At the time of writing, every portfolio has obtain a extra $25 000.You can buy at anytime from now...or next month...buy when you have a good opportunity or stay cash no problem Good luck to all in the game

Actually my post was in jest since the leader in the contest is down over 3% in less than 3 weeks. Just my way of saying that I think the markets are in for a continued rough ride over the next few months or more and that an all cash portfolio might stand the best chance of winning. My own personal portfolio is about 60% cash right now.

Hi Elephant ... contest sounds like fun. One thing I wish you would clarify up-front, though, is what exchange rate should be used to convert prices of USD securities to Cdn. Perhaps suggest the noon-Friday Bank of Canada rate?

You guys are free to do as you wish. There are few people that participate on here that need to prove themselves. I am very pleased with the sophistication as well as the ideas and concepts that are shared. Several investors posted their top picks at the beginning of 2007. Dundee was following their progress and posted updates occasionally. The small-cap market changes considerably from month to month so it is difficult to measure a portfolio unless investors have the opportunity to buy and sell. You are welcome to start this thread with your top picks Elephant. You may also want to share why you like the companies you post.
